I wrote about American Modern Opera Company's stunning production of John Adams's Christmas oratorio El Niño at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The performance amplified the maternal voice within the Christmas story using Latin American poetry and embraced common human experiences such as childbirth, violence, and hunger, mingling them with the spiritual to bring within reach a sense of the miraculous.
